Mobile TV Faces Licensing Problems

The arrival of mobile phone television services in Britain is tipped to create a multi- million pound nightmare for regulatory authorities as controversy over the new gadgets’ legal status prompts calls for a wholesale review of the country’s TV licensing laws.

Widely regarded as entertainment’s next boom market, the proliferation of services allowing customers to watch television shows on their mobile handsets has exposed flaws in current legislation which could see the Treasury missing out on its cut of a sales explosion

While universally acclaimed as “the next big thing”, controversy has flared up over the question of whether the new television-enabled handsets should be subject to the same licence fees as an ordinary set
