CTO Of Nortel Discusses Upcoming Bandwidth Boom


The Financial Times has a piece on the upcoming bandwidth boom. The author is John Roese is chief technology officer at Nortel.

Some interesting points:

At the heart of the internet are fat "pipes" - the fibre-optic equivalents of the LA Freeway - which can carry huge amounts of "traffic" in the form of voice, data, video and any combination thereof. The myriad on and off-ramps - connections that telecom service providers have hooked up to it - are not quite so fat or quite so fast.

Downloading a DVD on demand takes the equivalent bandwidth of 16m web page downloads, 400,000 e-mails, or nearly 2,000 iTunes songs (the size of web, music and e-mail files varies greatly, but these are realistic averages). And one movie on a dual-layer Blu-ray disk consumes the staggering equivalent of 100m web page downloads, 2.5m e-mails, and more than 12,000 iTunes songs.

The new services are gobbling up huge amounts of bandwidth, to the point where we have virtually eliminated the "bandwidth glut" of unused capacity that was built up during the late 1990s dotcom boom. We are, in fact, speeding towards a "bandwidth crisis".

On top of that, we are fast approaching a state of hyperconnectivity, where the number of devices, machines, and applications connected to the network will far exceed the number of people connected to it.

we need to expand the freeway but without the year-long roadworks that cause endless frustration. I would advocate doing this with advanced optical technology that essentially allows vehicles to be stacked on top of each other. This enables up to 10 times as much information to be carried in each lane of traffic without physically widening the road.

The Boom For Bandwidth...Or The Boom For Bandwidth Efficiency?

Some of the highlights.

-Today, fully one-third of all Internet traffic comes from Web videos.

-This year broadband adoption among U.S. adults is expected to cross the important threshold of 50%.

-the glut in broadband communications capacity is all but gone

-Thanks to bandwidth-hungry services such as YouTube, global Internet traffic from 2003 to 2006 grew at a compounded annual rate of 75% a year, according to TeleGeography. "When you compound those numbers, I don't care how much inventory you have, it's going to disappear off the shelf," says Level 3 CEO Crowe.

-A dollar spent on telecom infrastructure produces an outsize impact on the U.S. economy as a whole.

-That(Apple's iPhone), in turn, could create ever more demand for servers and routers, video services, and upgraded wireless networks.

-Verizon says it will steal a page from YouTube and allow TV customers to create their own personalized video channels

-While telecom revenues are now 19% higher than they were in 2000, that money supports just 1.1 million workers, down nearly 30% from boom-era levels.

-For the first time, this year the growth rate for new wireless subscribers in the U.S. is expected to decline.

-Back in 2004, Cisco's John Chambers recalls, critics laughed when Cisco rolled out an audacious new router, the CRS-1, capable of transmitting the entire contents of the Library of Congress in a few seconds. Analysts predicted only a handful would sell. This year, thanks to the video bandwidth hogs, sales of the CRS-1 are expected to hit $1 billion, more than double the figure for 2006.

What the article doesn't address is the efficiency of the network. There's lot of available bandwidth, that is not being utilized.Scott Shaffer

Things to ponder.

What happens when the bandwidth "pipe" is really opened and when sending/receiving any size of data, from any location, are no longer a factor?

What new multi-billion dollar companies are created? How much more efficient does our economy become?

With the proliferation of HDTV, IPTV, VoIP, SoIP, IPv6, YouTube etc how will, or could, this bandwidth demand be resolved?

Over a standard 100Mbps internet connection, TCP typically utilizes less that 3% of the available bandwidth. Downloading over HTTP, a 10 Gigabyte file over a 100Mbps connection from Asia to the United States would require over 18 hours to receive the file.

There's a software solution, that works over any IP network, utilizes up to 96% of the available bandwidth, performs 10-200 times faster, and does this under 20 minutes.

As Todd Dagres from Spark Capital said "Two kinds of IPs (Internet Protocol and Intellectual Property) are creating the biggest opportunity we've seen in a long time, probably since the Internet, in terms of new companies being formed and value being created"

Bandwidth....What Is It Good For, Absolutely Everything

Can we ever have too much bandwidth?

BusinessWeek has a neat story called More Bandwidth Than You Can Use/

The race to provide even bigger ones (data pipes) is intensifying among telecom and cable TV companies, as well as wireless network operators.

Some highlights:

Much as richer Web site graphics and music downloads idled millions of dial-up modems, the smart money is betting that future online video offerings—from high-definition TV and future iterations of YouTube-type video-sharing sites to sophisticated online gaming and video phone calls—will turn your average U.S. home into a 50Mbps bandwidth hog within three years.

-two or three people watching HDTV shows, playing music from the Internet, playing online games—the bandwidth demands are going to be gigantic

-Microsoft is adding Internet-based TV capability to its Xbox 360 Elite, and Sony will likely follow suit with its PlayStation 3. Thus equipped, households with a gamer or two will likely eat into their available bandwidth faster than others

Re: Interactive TV American Idol voting--Sure, it's easy to vote by phone or wireless text message. But the upstream bandwidth—which users need to upload data to the Internet rather than sucking it down—will be there to allow votes from the comfort of a remote control.

Re: Tivo/DVR users:--As you forward through the ads, you might see something that catches your eye and slow down to watch it. That's going to take more upstream capacity

There also will be a growing number of bandwidth-sipping devices around the house, which as yet aren't typically connected to the network. From heating and cooling systems to alarms and surveillance cameras, an increasing number of devices will be plugging into the network.

A couple I would like to include.

What about mobile phones and physical objects? Mobile phones will soon be tapping into the broadband connection at home. Physical objects with RFID tags and barcodes will soon be Internet accessable.

Comcast Initiates Coverage Of BitTorrent, And Their IPO, With A "Hold"


Comcast is essentially initiating coverage of the BitTorrent IPO with a "hold" rating.

Will more ISPs put a hold on BitTorrent traffic?

Is it false advertising if your ISP advertises x speed, but only delivers y?

CNN calls peer-to-peer file sharing service BitTorrent the Next Big IPO

Much of BitTorrent's popularity is due to its ability to break the download bottleneck.

"Rather than load a file from a single server to any and all PCs that want it, BitTorrent's software divides up a file so that users essentially download it from each other. Not only is BitTorrent faster and less taxing on bandwidth resources, it's also cheaper than conventional downloading".

I wonder, could BitTorrent's future, and IPO, already be in jeopardy?

TorrentFreak discovers Comcast throttling BitTorrent traffic.

"Over the past weeks more and more Comcast users started to notice that their BitTorrent transfers were cut off. Most users report a significant decrease in download speeds, and even worse, they are unable to seed their downloads."

"ISPs have been throttling BitTorrent traffic for almost two years now. Most ISPs simply limit the available bandwidth for BitTorrent traffic, but Comcast takes it one step further, and prevents their customers from seeding."

Here's an interesting take from the ISPs.

"One of the ISPs that joined our discussions said: “The fact is, P2P is (from my point of view) a plague - a cancer, that will consume all the bandwidth that I can provide. It’s an insatiable appetite.”, and another one stated: “P2P applications can cripple a network, they’re like leaches."

"Just because you pay 49.99 for a 1.5-3.0mbps connection doesn’t mean your entitled to use whatever protocols you wish on your ISP’s network without them provisioning it to make the network experience good for all users involved.”

Corporations Fail To Budget For Upcoming Bandwidth Boom


Nicholas Carr, author of The Big Switch and of IT Doesn't Matter states the information technology (IT) departments won't matter in the next few years as computing takes place on the Net, versus on the PC.

Will corporations be prepared for the upcoming bandwidth boom?

Enterprise bandwidth requirements will more than double in the next five years, yet budgets will only increase by five per cent, according to a surveyleaky faucet released today.

The research, carried out by Omniboss - a division of market analysis firm Vanson Bourne - among 100 senior IT decision makers found a further one in five executives thought their bandwidth requirements were likely to grow by 150 per cent or more.

Nearly one third (30 per cent) believed voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and converging voice, data and multimedia technologies such as video on demand would also have a significant effect on traffic in the future.

P2P Represents 44% Of All Bandwidth Consumed On The Net


As more physical objects get connected to the Net (Physical World Connection), and more video producing devices (video cameras, camera phones, surveillance cameras etc) do too, P2P control solutions and/or Internet protocols that make file sharing and transferring more efficient, will be places to watch.

Peer-to-peer file-sharing applications represent 44% of allP2P bandwidth consumed on networks operated by North American Internet service providers, up from around 41% a year ago, according to a survey by Sandvine, a vendor of bandwidth-management systems.

The three biggest overall generators of Internet traffic according to Sandvine’s May survey were:
- peer-to-peer file sharing (43.5%)
- Web browsing (27.3%)
- streaming media (14.8%)

The largest bandwidth hog is streaming video. Who is probably the biggest hog, YouTube.

Should YouTube be responsible for implementing controls?

Should ISP's charge YouTube for the drain on their network?

Wouldn't it be in their best interest to find a solution?

Imagine what happens with high-definition video.

P2P accounted for an even bigger portion of upstream direction, consuming more than twice as much traffic as all other traffic combined. The biggest traffic generator in the upstream direction is peer-to-peer file sharing (75.0%)

The End Of The Internet?....Or The Start Of Something Bigger

Last year, by one estimate, the video site YouTube, owned by Google, consumed as much bandwidth as the entire Internet did in 2000

a research firm projected that user demand for the Internet could outpace network capacity by 2011.

Nemertes Research, which predicted the bandwidth squeeze by 2011

Experts say, say, high-speed networks are increasingly the economic and scientific petri dishes of innovation, spawning new businesses, markets and jobs. If American investment lags behind, they warn, the nation risks losing competitiveness to countries that are making the move to higher-speed Internet access a priority.

And upgrades needed in data centers are going to be a lot more expensive than in the past, now that all the excess capacity left over after the dot-com bubble burst has been gobbled up

Hewlett Packard's $1.6B buy of Opsware, should give us some clues on what to look for.

iPlayer Threatens The Internet

Is this the first specific incident where a video application could strain the Internet?

Some of the largest broadband providers in the UK are threatening to "pull the plug" from the BBC's new iPlayer unless the corporation contributes to the cost of streaming its videos over the internet.

The likes of Tiscali, BT and Carphone Warehouse are all growing concerned that the impact of hundreds of thousands of consumers watching BBC programmes on its iPlayer – which allows viewers to watch shows over the internet – will place an intolerable strain on their networks.

As more consumers access and post video content on the internet – using sites such as YouTube – the ability of ISPs to cope with the amount of data being sent across their networks is coming under increasing strain, even without TV broadcasters moving on to the web. Analysts believe that ISPs will be forced to place stringent caps on consumers' internet use and raise prices to curb usage.

From WSJ Pessimists Say File Swapping Is Creating Traffic Jam

Researchers have long warned that rapid increases in Internet usage could strain the capacity of the data lines and gear that make up the network, severely slowing traffic and even knocking out service.

Prompting the latest concerns is the rapid growth of bandwidth-hungry applications like online video, file-sharing programs and Internet telephone service. Transmitting a minute of video can require 10 times the bandwidth of audio -- or more, depending on the quality. Already, peer-to-peer video swapping -- most of it illegal -- is estimated to represent in the range of more than one-third of all Internet traffic this year.

U.S. Internet video sites alone transmit more data per month than was carried over the entire U.S. Internet backbone monthly in 2000, according to network gear maker Cisco Systems Inc.

"One of the key possibilities for 2007 is that the Internet could be approaching its capacity," analysts at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu wrote in a January report

Robert Metcalfe, a venture capitalist at Polaris Venture Partners who helped build the early Internet as an engineer, thinks online-video traffic could cause slowdowns in Internet service for consumers, but that could lead them to use online video less, resulting in a sort of equilibrium.

Bill Gates And Mark Cuban Provide Vision

I always enjoy when visionaries give their thoughts on where technology is headed. Their vision of the future provides a better view of tomorrow's winners and losers.

As both point out, the current infrastructure of the Net will not be able to handle the upcoming applications in store.

Some interesting comments from Bill Gates on advertising and bandwidth at the Microsoft Strategic Acount Summit.

(On printed vs the screen) The ads in the online reading are completely targeted as opposed to just being run-of-print, where many of the readers will find them completely irrelevant.

(On TV) this idea of changing TV from being a simply broadcast medium to being a targeted medium.

In order to have this be targeted, you cannot send it over the airwaves.

There's just not enough capacity to broadcast thousands and thousands of different video feeds.

And that's where the Internet comes in. The Internet is now cheap enough that the idea of having every household in America watching a different video feed has become practical.

the ads will be targeted, not just targeted to the neighborhood level, but targeted to the viewer.

We'll actually not just know the household that that viewing is taking place in, we'll actually know who the viewers of that show are, and so it's a very rich environment.

Mark Cuban, founder of HDNet had this to say at a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet.

"no longer the case at all technology improves with age"

"the internet is not prepared to take on what digital video is calling for"

Now that the consumer Internet has matured, Cuban argues that it needs significant investment in last-mile infrastructure, specifically fiber.

While the Internet's fiber backbone is in no danger of running out of capacity, last-mile bottlenecks (especially through twisted-pair wiring) make the system "pretty weak" for transmitting video.

Even peer-to-peer networks, sometimes pitched as a solution to the problem, simply spread distribution from the center of the network, where bandwidth is available, to the edges, where bandwidth is constrained.

Internet For Everyone Gets Support


The Internet For Everyone, a new initiative aimed at making broadband a priority in the U.S., got a big push yesterday.

"People have just accepted that bandwidth is something that American families will spend hundreds of dollars on per month. People don't realize how much we pay for how little bandwidth we actually get."free internet

"Spectrum liberation in our time needs to be a priority for any national broadband policy," Wu said.

"And the 'white space' spectrum is a good way to do that. It offers a ton of bandwidth

Internet For Everyone Bridges Digital Divide

Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press, introduced the initiative, saying it was "outrageous" that "the country that invented the Internet" ranked 15th in broadband penetration at last count.
"Closing the broadband digital divide," said Silver, "must be a national priority."

According to Silver, the campaign would not support or oppose specific legislation, but instead would champion four core principles:

-- Access (fat pipes in every home),
-- choice (real competition between providers),
-- openness (this appears to be a code word for some flavor of 'Net neutrality),
-- innovation (job creation and economic growth).

Federal Communications Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, who declared himself a "frustrated policymaker," said it was clear that "what we're doing in Washington today isn't working."

Google announces the Internet For Everyone Campaign

Today Google joined a national initiative of public interest, civic and industry groups to help launch the Internet for Everyone campaign, whose goal is to make ubiquitous and open broadband access for every American a priority in the next administration.

Why is Google involved? Making the Internet accessible to more Americans is part of our corporate DNA. It's what has motivated our work on municipal wi-fi, in the 700 MHz spectrum auction, our investment in Clearwire and development of Android, and most recently our advocacy in support of opening up the unused portions of the tv spectrum band (White Space) for use by Internet devices.

Google's Larry Page:

Utilizing the unused TV "white spaces" for broadband access would be a tremendous opportunity to bring the Internet to more Americans -- including those in rural areas and first responders.
Because of the much longer range of these spectrum signals, wireless broadband access utilizing the TV white spaces could be brought to more consumers using fewer base stations -- in effect, "wi-fi on steriods
".

He said he is "100 percent confident" that the white spaces will be used for Internet access -- it's just a question of when.

The FCC is currently looking at freeing up more spectrum that could be used by new entrants to create new wireless broadband services.

The FCC is eyeing a proposal to free up a 20 MHz wireless spectrum to be used for free wireless services; supporting such efforts is key to supporting a national broadband policy. The commission put out a request for comments on the proposal last week.

Broadband A National Priority
There are still pockets of the U.S., especially in rural areas, where broadband is only offered by one provider or by none at all. And prices per bit are still much higher than they are in other parts of the world.

Broadband proponents see "white spaces" as an important asset to be used in expanding the broadband market.

Verizon Offers FiOS With Groundbreaking 20 Mbps Download and Upload Speeds

Verizon Offers 20 Mbps Download And Upload Speeds

Verizon has changed the definition of "fast" with the introduction of a new, symmetrical Verizon FiOS Internet service for consumers, featuring an upload and download speed of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps).

"Verizon's new 20/20 FiOS service blows cable away. Their upload speeds don't even come close," said Susan Retta, vice president, Broadband Solutions for Verizon.

The equally fast upload and download speed of the new symmetrical FiOS service also enhances interactive services like video conferencing, online multi-player gaming, telemedicine, electronic home monitoring, online work collaboration, data backups and more.

Most people don't know what speeds they are getting, you will be surprised.

What does the end of the Windows era tell us?

Does the PC really matter any more?

Is bandwidth more of a factor than chip speed?

Microsoft's announcement this week signals major transformation ahead.

Amazon, (and their recent VC funding of Elastra ) Microsoft, Google and IBM, AT&T, HP, Verizon and Salesforce.com are all shifting to a new type of "operating system", called cloud computing.

-----Cloud computing is the new catch phrase for utility computing, where customers buy computing power from a provider that hosts the software infrastructure applications on its own server computers and storage arrays.

-----That lets the customer save themselves the hassle and cash of having to purchase their own hardware and software; ostensibly, the customer rents the computing power necessary to run the applications they use on the Internet. This is a sign of the increasing Webification of the working world, where the Internet is the platform.

If the "Internet is the platform":

If "processing" is now being done on the Net, wouldn't bandwidth speed be more of a factor than chip processing speed?

Bandwidth, storage and delivery services become priorities.

Chip speed no longer a factor......

So where do chip companies turn for growth now that chip speed and the PC era is over?

Fear not, there's another industry for the chip companies that can utilize Moore's Law --the number of transistors that can be inexpensively placed on an integrated circuit is increasing exponentially
.

And that is exactly why why semiconductor companies are making their move into solar

Walt Mossberg Reviews AirCell's InFlight GoGo Service


Wall Street Journal Walt Mossberg reviews AirCell's GoGo service.

Beginning this summer, as soon as next month, wireless Internet access will arrive in the passenger cabins of some commercial U.S. airliners.

On these Internet-equipped planes, any passenger with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop — or a cellphone with Wi-Fi — will be able to do almost everything he or she could do online at home or at the office. That includes surfing the Web, using email, having instant-messenger text chats, downloading and uploading files, and streaming video and audio.gogo

A few Web functions will be offered free from Gogo, including access to the American Airlines Web site, to Frommer’s online travel guides and to a limited selection of articles from The Wall Street Journal.

What other companies should subsidize free Web functions?

On my test flight, download speeds varied from 266 kilobits per second to about 1.4 megabits per second, with the most typical speeds hovering between 500 and 600 kbps. Upload speeds were between 250 and 300 kbps.

Speeds could degrade on a large plane with scores of people online simultaneously.

While AirCell is making all of the aviation broadband headlines, Harris Corp recently announced an Air-to-ground solution (ATG) that has 10xs the capacity at same or lower cost. In most cases they offer 10-50x more bandwidth and 5-100xs lower cost per bit.

Aircell gets Internet access to the planes through a network of 92 towers scattered across North America. These essentially are cellphone towers, carrying a high-speed cellphone data signal, except that the Aircell antennas point up, into the sky. A receiver on the underside of the aircraft picks up the signal, which is then distributed through the plane via Wi-Fi.

AirCell has a few obstacles to overcome:

Limited bandwidth, scalability issues and I'm not sure AirCell's service can be used in Europe or Asia.

In Europe, Lufthansa has announced that with the help of T-Mobile it will be reinstating its broadband service (formerly from Connexion) to its long-haul flights by 2008.

Europe seems to be giving voice the nod as an in-flight service, and more bandwidth will be required. The health of US airlines is also a concern. I would keep an eye on the other aviation broadband players.

Look for a high-speed aviation broadband service to get traction in Europe first.

What Does This Do To The Value Of YouTube?


How does this affect Internet advertising, and the value of YouTube?

Companies across the U.S. are starting to prevent their employees from accessing Internet-video services (YouTube) at work.

Now, online video has become an increasing irritation. Worker productivity is being jeopardized as short, often low-quality video clips popularized by YouTube are being joined by better-quality video services with long-form content.

(here's the kicker)

According to a study released last month by Nielsen Online, an Internet tracking service owned by Nielsen Co., the heaviest consumption of Internet video is during weekday lunch hours from noon to 2 p.m., when most people are at work.

Isn't that the equivalent of turning off TV and ads during prime time?

Bandwidth capacity relief for corporate networks?

Online video also is taxing already strained corporate networks. It poses a particular problem for smaller companies, which have limited bandwidth capacity to accommodate bulky video files. Online video files on average are about seven times as large as audio files, and 100 times as large as e-mail

American Airlines Kicks Off AirCell's In-Flight Internet Service


The "Prodigy" of aviation broadband service is taking off.


It's great that we are getting some type of Internet service on a plane. However, due to Aircell's limited bandwidth and scalability issues, I think we will see a much faster aviation broadband service leapfrog Aircell. We all know what happened to Prodigy.

From Reuters American Airlines kicks off in-flight Internet service.

AMR Corp's American Airlines began offering Internet access on long-haul domestic flights on Wednesday, making American the first U.S. airline to offer full in-flight broadband. The world's largest airline said its passengers on Boeing 767-200 aircraft can pay $12.95 for Internet access on nonstop flights between New York and San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, and New York and Miami.

There are approximately 2000 planes in air at any one time in US or Europe and Aircell couldn't accommodate even a fraction of these planes.

I would keep an eye out for Harris Corp and their recently introduced aviation broadband service.

Harris, which does a ton of business with the FAA, recently announced an Air-to-ground solution (ATG) that has 10xs the capacity at same or lower cost. In most cases they offer 10-50x more bandwidth, 5-100xs lower cost per bit, and speeds up to 35 Mbps.

    • Apple stopped including pre-installed versions of Java in OS X and instead gives users the option to install the framework. More recently, Apple issued an update that turns off Java in the browser when users haven't used it recently.

       The newest updates of the Macintosh operating system will make sure that all the versions of Java be removed from the system. Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) made this announcement on Friday. Apple, on the official support site revealed that Java script will be removed from their native operating systems, since experts have recently discovered that the Java bugs help attackers infiltrate the security of the system and get information. This discovery was made in August, when the experts had conducted the experiment by launching attacks through the bugs found in Java. They were successful.
    • Apple (AAPL) is removing old versions of Oracle's (ORCL) Java software from Internet browsers on the computers of its customers when they install the latest update to its Mac operating system.
