Amazon Versus Apple..Which Offers Greater Upside?

Many people mocked Jeff Bezos and his Internet vision, heck he even looks and acts kind of funny. However, this November he will be regarded as a visionary.

Amazon created a one stop ecommerce shop for any type of merchandise and made it simple to buy with their one click technology. They opted to stay away from the music side and focus on books with the Kindle (hardware).

The ad supported version of Kindle, when idle, will display the Amazon Local Deals. Amazon found a way to "push" these deals...am I the only tired of getting endless groupon type emails?

So Amazon is really the first group buying player with their own piece of hardware..sorry Groupon you can't compete with this. Amazon already knows my billing info and I can easily one click to buy the latest deal.

If Amazon's Local Deals is anything like their Kindle Content, or Selling Platform, they just created one of the most effective ways for a small business to broadcast their daily deal.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Amazon create a secondary market for group deals too.

Now Amazon will be launching their own tablet, the Amazon Tablet for $250 Kindle Fire for $199 (and it's on pace to outsell the iPad and iPad2) in November...it may not kill the iPad sales, but it will sure take a good chunk of their marketshare away.

Amazon is valued at $100B, approximately one third of Apple's $300B.

Apple has done a fantastic job of selling digital content and hardware that supports it..but here's what they missed.

Four years ago I said that Apple needed to find a way to diversify the content/merchandise offered on iTunes. They have a one click purchase portal and use it for more than digital content.

Which company do you think offers greater upside?

Patent Play Stocks

With the surge of acquisitions in the intellectual property space, I have created a list of publicly traded companies with patents that might be classified as disruptive.

In my book, How To Find Big Stocks, I discuss how intellectual property is the new "raw material" for the U.S. economy and the Internet is the new manufacturing and distribution system.

I give you a tool that spots waves and Big Stocks in them.

The How To Find Big Stocks Newsletter highlights companies we feel are poised to turn into Big Stocks.

Patents and ways to monetize them, represent a huge investable wave coming.

Delays in processing have artificially lowered the foreclosure numbers over the past year, so this new surge is likely addressing loans that have been long delinquent, but unaddressed.

Move Over Bill And Andy, Steve Is Now Leading

This week marked a tipping point in the world domination of technology leadership. For years Microsoft's Windows and Intel's chips, known as "WinTel", represented the "Gorillas" in the technology space. These 2 companies had the key enabling technology for the PC industry. Their market caps combined MSFT (220B) and INTC (120B) equal $340B.

Think about how many "computers" have that Apple logo..iPods, iPads, MacBooks etc. Each one of those represents a new PC. Now consider all of those PCs have an Apple operating system inside too.

As the PC went mobile, a new leader emerged, Apple. When Apple announced their earnings this week their share price appreciated enough as their market capitalization exceeded $350B.

Apple, sitting on $76B cash, is now worth more than Microsoft and Intel combined. A new leader has emerged.

What I see next:

As computing shifts from the device to the cloud, a new leader will emerge. There will be a new gorilla. The "power" of processing will take place on some server miles away from your device. Google's Chromebook and its 8 second bootup and limited software programs will be the new norm.

Content on your device will shift to being stored on the cloud. Gaining access to it will be CRITICAL, there's the area I would watch. Devices will rely on Net connections now more than ever. Access and security will play key roles going forward.

Microsoft, Intel and Cisco, once the "Kings of Tech" have fallen. We are witnessing the next generation of technology.

Augme Buys Mobile Barcode Player Jag Tag

Cisco predicted 50 billion "things" will be connected to Net by 2020. The "Internet of Things" is definitely a trend to watch.

A barcode represents a URL to a camera phone, or a physical world hyperlink. Any physical object can now be linked to the Internet.

JagTag, one of the companies on my Physical World Connection list, was acquired by Augme today.

(the Physical World Connection list should provide some additional acquisition candidates)

Will This Be The Final Curtain For Newspapers?

I just saw a TV ad for CouponSuzy. A site that lets you print out coupons from your favorite consumer goods.

They also offer a Daily Deal section too.

What I am wondering is this.

How much revenue do the coupons generate for local newspapers?

If you can get the same coupons online (from a plethora of coupon sites), does this stick a fork in the local newspaper?

Cognitive Vision From The Pondering Primate

The overall theme I saw this week. Major disruption ahead for the wireless provider industry.

Facebook users can chat through Skype link
Does this make Microsoft a player again?

The possibilities for this partnership are huge. How does this impact mobile phone providers?

Google in talks to buy Hulu. link
I am wondering if Google's ownership of YouTube will prevent this from happening. A video monopoly? Largest media could get a lot bigger.

WiFi hotspots represent the new cell network link
Mobile carriers should be concerned. Technology that let cell calls seamlessly switch from cell to hotspot should be huge.

A rare earth discovery in Japan could ease supply issues link

Justin Timberlake spends $35m to buy MySpace. link. Imagine what he could do with a membership of 135 million members. Change the name of the site and target a certain demographic or industry.

Something to ponder. Who really owns your data once you upload it to the cloud? link

Skype owns 50% of the VOIP market link

Digital currency the next go? link

Your privacy on Google will be gone on July 31 link
Does this allow them to share it now too?

Mobile payments and digital goods will dominate. link
Your mobile phone is slowly morphing into a wallet.

The end of unlimited data plans for mobile? link
The tipping point for VOIP services? What happens when video takes off?

A new high speed network link

Should wireless carriers be concerned?

Will WiFi Hotspots Replace Cell Towers?

You may not realize it yet but your home will soon become a cell tower.

Every coffee shop, airport, book store, mall, stadium will have them too.

When a wi-fi router is added to a broadband Internet connection, it becomes a wireless broadband “cell tower”.

GigaOm discusses the future of the cell phone network saying the future of cellular service the Wi-Fi hotspot will have a starring role. link

The rapid increase of data being sent across the mobile network will force mobile carriers to push this traffic to a more efficient and faster highway, the wifi hotspot.

Technology that enables this has been called The Next Big Thing For Mobile

The easiest and most cost effective solution for wireless carriers to solve this upcoming bandwidth bottleneck is to enable a cellphone on their network to seamless switch to a wi-fi network when the signal is too weak or it becomes cost effective.

Most cell phones are equipped with the necessary hardware to do this, the only thing missing is the software.

Want to know the company that has this software?

Think about it, every router represents a personal cell tower. Cities dont want to build more towers so why not use the hundreds or thousands of "towers" already established.

I found the company with software that enables seamless switching across any frequency that I call the Wireless Wonder.

One of the most prestigious consulting companies in the world gave this company their "Technology of the Year Award" and called this patented wireless technology "revolutionary".

If you would like to see what this technology is and what company owns it, email me with subject line "Wireless Wonder"

California Taxes The Net...Amazon Bails

File this under "How dumb can you be?"

This is what I call a "rupt", a catalyst that leads to a big wave.

California now requiring all online retailers to start collecting taxes from California customers.

And the result?

Amazon and online retailer Overstock.com Inc. told thousands of California Internet marketing affiliates that they will stop paying commissions for referrals of so-called click-through customers

Beginning Friday, Amazon.com and other large out-of-state retailers will be required to collect sales taxes on purchases that their California customers make online.

The revenue California expects to generate from this tax($317m) will be minor compared to the jobs they lose and OTHER tax revenue lost from affiliate revenue.

A bankrupt state implementing anti-business idea....not surprising. There are much better ways to get that $317m than to jeopardize hundreds, if not thousands of jobs.

I see border states getting an influx of new "friends".

The End Of The Internet..Or Just The Beginning?

Imagine every physical object being connected to the Net.

Soon every Internet-connected device anywhere in the world will have its own IP address.

This month's World IPv6 Day served as a test run for a protocol that should dramatically increase how many devices can be connected to the Internet.

The new protocol will be crucial if many more objects—including light bulbs, kitchen appliances, and environmental sensors—are to have IP addresses, connect to the Internet, and send and receive data.

The new system allows for around 340 trillion, trillion, trillion addresses—nearly 50 octillion for every person on earth.

Personalized Medicine Has Arrived

What is the next big thing after the Internet?

What is predicted to be one of the biggest transformational changes, finally arrived today.

Scientists look for the causes of diseases that in turn might lead to new drugs or diagnostic tests.

Mapping someone's genetic code to create personalized medicine.

The key thing to remember, using gene mapping to create personal medicine will not just treat a disease, but CURE it.

Personal Genome Map Solves Teen Illness

U.S. researchers are reporting one of the first examples where mapping someone's genetic code led to better treatment.

Doctors could not tell what was causing 14-year-old Alexis Beery's breathing problems.

Then scientists at Houston's Baylor College of Medicine discovered a gene flaw. That led to a new prescription that has her back to running track.

Want to know what company owns patents to over 95% of the genome?

If any company wants to breed a better tomato, design a better drug, or do ANY type of genomic mapping on ANY living organism using 95% of the genome, they will have to pay this company hidden from Wall St. a fee. Fortune 500 companies have already started to license the use of this database.

What Happens To Utilities When Consumers Can Create Or Harness Their Own Power

Is the utility industry the next major industry to become extinct?

What happens to the power industry (utilities) when consumers are able to "create"/harness their own power?

The newspaper industry started to die as soon as TV branched out to more than 13 channels. The knockdown punch came when the Internet arrived. People had an infinite dynamic choices to get their news.

While there aren't an infinite amount of options for power (yet), solar and wind options will take away some of the utility industry's monopoly.

Brad Tirpak, Managing Partner at the private investment fund Locke Partners made the case that:

electric utilities are as woefully unprepared for the coming disruption of cheap, distributed solar power as newspapers were unprepared for the disruption of the internet in 2000

His conclusion?

Regulated utilities should be able to handle the imminent changes to the industry brought about by the implementation of solar energy and other renewable sources.

Electric Utilities Today Like Newspapers in 2000

SPDY About To Make The Web A Lot Faster

How long does the average user give a website to load before leaving?

Welcome To A Faster Web

SPDY, a protocol Google revealed in late 2009, dramatically speeds up Web page loading by changing the way that browsers communicate with servers.

Website optimization company Strangeloop has built SPDY into its flagship product Site Optimizer, software that sits in between a website and its users, and adjusts the site's code to make pages load more quickly.

Strangeloop's customers will have the ability to turn the protocol on easily; in tests, the protocol has sped up websites by 10 to 20 percent.

Has Interest In Facebook Peaked?

Just a blip or the start of something bigger?

Facebook sees big drop in traffic

"overall growth has been lower than normal for the second month straight"

"This is the first time the country has lost users in the past year"

Facebook shares have recently fallen in the private marketplace, even after LinkedIn's wildly successful IPO.

What is Facebook losing traffic to? Another networking site or is this just a typical summer (outside enjoying the day not sitting at a desk all day) normalcy?

Have people become inundated with the posts from hundreds of their "friends" and tuned out? Facebook is really like an RSS feed of your friends.Have people started to unsubscribe?

I have noticed a slowdown in my friend's posts on my Facebook feed for several months. I would love to see a chart of average number of "friends" each user has, and per each age group/sex. I think that would be a better stat.

As you get older, you realize time is a very precious commodity. Maybe people are doing some "friend" spring cleaning.

You need a license to get married, practice law, drive a car, fly a plane and even go fishing.

A license is even required to sell securities(stocks) to the public. But there is NO requirement to run one of those companies.

In order to run a publicly traded corporation, the S.E.C should require some type of certification.

I am seeing too many CEOs that think they own the ship and have forgotten their job is to steer it.

Internet Traffic To Grow 4 Fold In 4 Years

Cisco, in its fifth annual Visual Networking Index forecast, also said that the number of network-connected devices by 2015 will reach more than 15 billion, or about twice the world’s population.

Cisco says the increase in traffic from 2014 to 2015 alone will be 200 exabytes, more than the total IP traffic generated in 2010.

Some other staggering stats:

What Happens To Internet Traffic With iCloud Service?

What does Apple's iCloud service do to Internet traffic?

Cell providers are already pushed to their limits with the iPhone but the iCloud service could force them to offload traffic to WiFi networks.

iCloud, a service that means music, photos, and documents saved onto an Apple device will soon appear almost instantly on any other Apple product that a person owns.

(Here's the key part)
When an iCloud user takes a photo or saves a document with an Apple device, that file is instantly uploaded to iCloud over either Wi-Fi or the cellular network.

That person's other Apple devices then automatically download the file as soon as possible. That means someone taking a day trip can take photos on an iPhone and then flip through them on their iPad as soon as they return home.

Does that mean EVERY time you take a picture with your phone it automatically pushes it to iCloud?

As the cameras take higher resolution pics, the amount of data being sent will grow too.

Groupon Gets Into Pawn Business

Apparently the founders of Groupon saw the writing on the wall and have backed the next big thing in ecommerce, pawn shops.

Lightbank run by the founders of Groupon led a round of financing for Pawngo

The Pawngo business model, as CEO Todd Hills explained it, is aimed at people who need between $1,500 and $15,000. They send in information about items they wish to pawn and Pawngo’s valuation lab in Denver returns an estimate within an hour.

How about creating or funding a site that provides a secondary market for groupons?

You have to wonder how valuable the Groupon email subscriber list is and what other "deals" they could offer.

Google's ChromeBook...The End of the PC?

When Google launches their Chromebook it will disrupt the personal computing industry.

Why would anyone need a PC? You wont.

All of your data and computing will be on the "cloud", not on the PC. It will have NO programs, everything will be web based.

The Wireless Wonder...A 100 Bagger?

Years ago we identified the trend of mobile phones and barcodes connecting the physical world to the Net.

Another major trend is starting to take develop and we have discovered the company that owns the intellectual property that makes it happen.

This technology was found using the BigStockular (tool highlighted in the BigStock Book.

The are approximately 5 billion mobile phones in use today worldwide. As more phones become "smart" they will tax the current cell network's ability to provide a constant contact regardless of data size or location. There is one method that carriers are starting to implement and it utilizes an explosion of new mini "cell towers". One company has the technology and intellectual property that enables these new "cell towers" to be be utilized.

 Calypso Wireless  (CLYW)

This is a company we have been invested in since 2004. We knew the story could be very big one day. It appears the time is getting close. This is as high risk as they come, but the rewards could be life changing.

I am sure you know how valuable "handing off" a cell call is. When you're traveling your call is passed off to another cell tower so the call isn't dropped. The cell uses the same frequency as it is passed along to each tower.

The holy grail of mobile communications is maintaining a connection regardless of data size or location.

That will require a cell phone to automatically look for different frequencies to switch to when original signal is getting weak.

The proliferation of wifi hotspots have essentially created endless "cell towers" but they operate at a different frequency than a cell tower.

These multiplying "cell towers" are being used to "hand off" a cell call saving carriers a boatload of money (no need to buy/lease more cell towers and/or buy spectrum).

The ability to switch between cell tower and wi-fi (without user having to do anything) is the next big thing for mobile.

Calypso Wireless (CLYW) has the patent covering auto switching with cell, satellite and wifi any two different frequencies.

U.S. Patent 6,680,923
Calypso Wireless' patented ASNAP(TM) technology enables the seamless roaming of voice, video and data between Wide Area Network access points, such as cellular towers and short-range Internet access points (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc).

ASNAP(TM) also enables greatly enhanced services such as broadband connectivity, real time two way video conferencing, VoIP and network-based gaming applications via Calypso's cellular phones, PDA's or any mobile device powered with ASNAP(TM).

ASNAP (white paper)

In addition, but not limited to the ASNAP(TM) patent, Calypso's holds the patent to the incredible technology which enables cellular phones and PDAs to convert any incoming text message to voice message and vice versa.

ASNAP (Automatic Switching of Network Access Points) represents the holy grail of mobile communications, which is the seamless switching between unlicensed and licensed spectrums with no interruption to service.

Calypso Wireless is marketing and licensing its proprietary switching technology. This proprietary technology is the convergence of Cellular and Wi-Fi networks, which will make it possible for wireless users to roam between their Wi-Fi zones and their mobile phone carrier networks, in a seamless manner.

All companies that produce as well as utilize the infringed technology can be sued for patent infringement.

What this means is the makers of wireless routers, cell phone makers and other equipment that operates with auto-switching capability, as well as providers of service (ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, and others) that allow this capability, could be sued for patent infringement.

Making VOIP calls over Wifi does not present a problem with the ASNAP patents. The patents cover the switching from cell tower to wifi (and satellite to wifi). It is the "handing off" to another frequency that their IP covers.

What does it mean?

Potentially billions in licensing revenue.

Licensed wireless spectrum is sold at a premium to wireless carriers. Unlicensed spectrum like WiFi and bluetooth, is free to use and anyone can use it. Cell towers are notoriously expensive to lease and maintain.

T-mobile is positioning themselves uniquely in the industry by augmenting their cellular offering with wifi support for calling. Once they secure a license to the ASNAP patent it will be a few software changes to the Android wifi calling product to make it seamless. They will be first to market amount US carriers if they can wrap this lawsuit up and get it out there onto an already exploding Android platform.

In a single Android device you could have cellular, satellite, and wifi and wherever you are your device could switch to the most cost effective transport. Most devices on the market now support all this in terms of hardware. The software is the key and Calypso has the patent.

If you want to see how big this technology is, just Google "UMA unlicensed mobile access" or "switch from cell tower to wifi". Plenty of credible techies feel this technology is worth billions.

Our quick summary on CLYW. (Please Read)

The company has no money just a couple patents (approved in all of Europe and Mexico).

Calypso initially went the route of building phones with ASNAP technology and demoed to a number of carriers. One was T-Mobile.

They soon realized (just like Qualcomm) it is MUCH cheaper just to license the technology.

They have stayed out of the public's eye on purpose. While they were busy getting their house in order, they watched as carriers started to implement UMA.

The stock trades on the pink sheets (grey sheets) (yuck). There are NO current financials. They haven't issued a press release in months. This stock is as ugly as they come. Wall St has both forgotten about it or just written it off.

According to their last financial statement they had 197m shares outstanding giving it a market cap of approximately $16m ($8m) With that valuation and a win in court, we feel this stock could very well be a 10 Bagger, if not a 100 Bagger.

An upcoming court case In Texas (which is too long to explain), will determine Calypso's financial obligations and percentage ownership of the patent. This case is expected to begin in June 2011 and should last 4-5 days.
(case was settled in August 2011)

To follow the analysis of the court case there are some pretty smart legal minds on this message board. There is plenty of info on the T-Mobile settlement negotiations too.

Let us stress this is a VERY RISKY stock but if Calypso Wireless prevails in court, it could be life changing. DO NOT INVEST any more than you can afford to lose.
