Buying Music Via SMS

Emap Performance TV music channels including Kiss and Kerrang will be the first broadcast channels to try out a new impulse purchase system for digital music via mobile phones from MMP Global. “The service, delivered by technology company MPP Global Solutions, allows the listener to request a song when they see a music video on TV or hear it on the radio, by using an SMS shortcode. They then receive a reverse-billed SMS and are given a code to redeem the file online.”

James Cridland, head of new media at Virgin Radio, likes the idea but is worried “that you may develop a revenue-driven playlist”.
